What would you do if you found out you only had months to live? Well, when Michele Baldwin's doctors told her she had late-stage cervical cancer, there was only one thing she could do - live. Lady Ganga is the inspiring documentary - currently being funded through a Kickstarter campaign - which follows Baldwin, a 45 year old mother of three who sees her diagnosis as a call to action. She embarks on a trip to India - which has the highest mortality rate from cervical cancer in the world - to paddle board over 700 miles down the Ganges River, spreading awareness about this preventable disease and breaking a World Record in the process.
Filmmakers Frederic Lumiere and Mark Hefti are behind the Lady Ganga documentary, which not only tells Michele's epic story, but also aims to bring about awareness, help save lives and maybe even eradicate a preventable cancer.
You see, cervical cancer is caused by a highly prevalent, sexually transmitted virus called HPV. It's so widespread, that 80% of all people under 50 years of age will be exposed to the virus at some point in their lives. Globally, HPV causes many cancers in both men and women which is why Michele wanted her story to reach as many people as possible around the world.
The Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for Lady Ganga has already been incredibly successful - reaching the initial target in less than 48 hours - however, additional funding will allow Lumiere and Hefti to spread Michele's message even further.
Once the film is finished, 100% of profits from the sale and licensing of the film will go to the Michele Baldwin Memorial Fund, which is managed by the ASHA (American Sexual Health Association), a 100 year-old non-profit organization that runs the NCCC (National Cervical Cancer Coalition) and the Global Initiative Against HPV and Cervical Cancer.
